Tips and Tricks for getting the best Oak Island vacation property experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • In the Cape Fear area area, The sooner you can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked very early. Booking your rental property up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
  • Summer is high season in Oak Island. To find the largest rental home for your budget, we suggest reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at popular Cape Fear area attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Some hosts offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group.
  • Property management companies usually offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Look for your local Cape Fear area visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guides have deals for local accommodations and attractions.

Choosing the best rental home:

  • First and foremost, have your family commit to the best dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Farmhouse at Turtle Creek: Beautiful, 3-Story, Custom Home with Decks Galore! Sh has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available online. If they are not listed, call the property management company before reserving the property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or costs could be applied to your invoice.
  • If there's a particular Cape Fear area destination you love, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your requirements.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking

Know before you go:

  • Add the owner's information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let crooks spoil your holiday.
  • To ensure that damages are not linked to your family's stay, record any problem areas during arrival. Contact the property manager right away to relay any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your life at home. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • At departure, complete a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a terrific vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
