Our top Rental home tips:

Get the most from your rental budget:

  • Summer is high season in Oak Island. To find the best value, consider shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
  • The sooner you can book, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked very early. Booking your vacation home up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Look for your local Cape Fear area visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides contain offers and deals for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Choose vacation dates and spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Dog Friendly - Ocean View - Elevator - Steps From The Beach! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, contact the property management company before you reserve your rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction or event? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
  • If your family is traveling with pets, filter your search for a property that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Get the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be respectful. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Lock your rental while you're out and about. Protect your property!
  • On check-out day, take a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget anything. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a fantastic stay? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
