Our top Vacation rental tips and tricks:
How to get the best rental value:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Cape Fear area area. To get the best value, try shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Cape Fear area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Cape Fear area visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guide magazines have discounts for local shops and restaurants.
Finding the best vacation home:
- To start, have your group decide on trip dates and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Fish, Fun & Sun @ 4BR 2BA OCEANFRONT COTTAGE - Oak Island, Long Beach, NC has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email or call the host before you book the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property management company about pet restrictions before booking.
- Visiting for a specific attraction or event? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
More considerations for your visit:
- Get the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few difficulties.
- Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let crooks ruin your family vacation.
- Document any damages to the property at check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a great resource to find the best local beaches and restaurants.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental to confirm you've collected everything. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a great stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
