Sometimes a name says it all, and the Museum of the Bizarre is a short but engaging trip through some of Wilmington’s more unusual chapters in history. A popular destination for weird-loving visitors and film buffs, the museum has a host of ever-changing exhibits that can include everything from props from locally-filmed movies or television shows to antique pieces that have a colorful backstory.
The museum is located in the heart of Downtown Wilmington in an ancient brick building that’s also home to the locally acclaimed Cape Fear Sepentarium, which makes it an easy destination for rainy day explorers who don’t want to venture too far from the waterfront. Once inside, visitors will find a small but extensive collection of exhibits, which can include Houdini’s Ouija Board, a Chupacabra Hand, a Bigfoot Imprint, Alexander Hamilton’s Hair, and a big array of movie props. The movie props are a big draw for film buffs, and are always changing depending on what’s recently been shot or produced in the area. With a number of seasonal exhibits and special events, (including an annual haunted house), this modestly-sized but engaging museum will be a favorite destination for both young and young-at-heart Wilmington visitors alike.
