Getting the best value:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To find the best rental within budget, we suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular attractions. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Booking websites often offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Cape Fear area visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines have deals for local restaurants, attractions, and tours.

  • Select your vacation week and budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Beautiful oceanfront condo has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking pages. Otherwise, contact the property manager before you book the rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or charges may be applied to your invoice.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the host's information to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • To make certain damages are not linked to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas when you arrive. Call the property manager right away to document any issues. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers bothering your life at home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and places you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Double-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed everything at check-out. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a fantastic time? Most rental managers make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
