Tricks and tips for getting the perfect rental home experience:

Getting the most from your spending budget:

  • Summer months are the most expensive season in Oak Island. Booking your vacation rental in the Fall or Spring is an excellent way to save money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Cape Fear area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation rentals are reserved early. Reserving your rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your vacation rental.
  • Some property managers offer discounts for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
  • Booking websites usually offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Cape Fear area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Select a group lead, select your vacation week, and select a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Victoria's Seacret: Modest Oceanfront Home with a Wide Beachfront Deck. has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible online. If they are not listed, contact the property management company before you book the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental
  • If your family is traveling with pets, filter your search for a pet-friendly property. Ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.

More tips for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
  • To ensure that damages are not linked to your family's stay, inspect for any problem areas during check in. Speak to the property manager immediately to record any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of problems.
  • Be respectful. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Double-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on good ratings to inspire new reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your review find their best vacation rental. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
