Vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
Sticking to your rental budget:
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal NC. Booking your vacation home in Fall or Spring months is an excellent way to save on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Cape Fear area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
- Property management companies usually offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Cape Fear area area visitor guides which often include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Narrow your Search:
- Choose a designated group leader, choose your trip dates, and choose a budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. The Little Paddle Beach Cottage near the Boardwalk has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is often accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before reserving the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- If your family is bringing pets, filter your search for a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some hosts charge additional pet fees.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all required amenities are included before booking
More considerations for your visit:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few concerns.
- Lock your rental home while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Record any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are helpful if damages are assessed.
- Be a good neighbor. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- At departure, complete a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the host is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
- Did you have a excellent vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
